Substantial Internet Disruption Hits Numerous Sites and Apps
An extensive web outage has impacted many websites and applications around the world, and users experiencing issues getting online due to difficulties at the cloud computing service.
The impacted apps comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated operations such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with also reports of problems using the HMRC site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring customers used online platforms to complain their doorbells were not working.
Just within Britain, notifications of problems on particular apps reached the tens of thousands for every service.
Officials confirmed that the issue began in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a section that offers essential online framework for a host of companies, who lease capacity on Amazon servers. AWS is the world’s largest online services system.
Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “elevated failure rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The cascading impact was seen to affect apps worldwide, with the Downdetector site showing problems with the same sites in different parts of the world.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors web disruptions, also reported a surge in problems on Monday morning, including several cases found in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the problems began.
